The Wisdom and the Spirit

“And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke” (Acts 6:10 NKJV).

This verse speaks to the last words of Stephen the first martyr. For some reason, these words have intrigued me over the years. What does it mean that those who heard him could not “resist” his wisdom? Not only did they resist him, they killed him. As we look at Stephen’s life we find several very interesting things about him. He was full of faith and power (Acts 6:8) as well as wisdom. Pause with me here. Can you imagine being full of faith, power, and wisdom? Our enemies may say we are fools, but truth penetrates.

The reason I bring this up is to help remove the fear of witnessing. We sit next to someone on the plane and sense the urge to share the gospel. The enemy is quick to remind us that we are ill equipped to defend the faith. Suppose they are an atheist or brilliant scientist? I will look like a fool. So let me help you realize that you have the upper hand in the dialogue.

The Scriptures give us all we need to enter this warfare. So here is the strategy:

  1. All unbelievers know there is a God. (Ps. 14, Rom. 1).
  2. All unbelievers have eternity written in their hearts (Eccl. 3:11).
  3. All unbelievers suppress the truth (Rom. 1).
  4. All unbelievers are convicted by the Spirit of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16).
  5. All unbelievers have a conscience.

You are now armed to the hilt. You have all the wisdom you need. When that wisdom is unleashed, they will not be able to resist it. They may try, but their conscience will bear witness to the truth, no matter how seared their conscience is.
