There are people in Scripture few Christians know anything about, yet who played a significant role in changing the trajectory of history.
Who are these people and what role in God’s redemptive plan did they play? I write this to be an encouragement to those of us who feel we have no significant place in the metanarrative of biblical history. Yes, the canon of Scripture is closed, but God is still writing His story.
There are many famous scholars, pastors, and missionaries who came to Christ through the witness of people whose names will never be known. One of the greatest living scholars today was led to Christ over a cheeseburger at Wendy’s. His ministry is now world-renown. His name is Tim Mackie, and he started the Bible Project.
There are many famous scholars, pastors, and missionaries who came to Christ through the witness of people whose names will never be known. Share on XDr R. C. Sproul was challenged by some of his college friends to read Ecclesiastes 11:3, which has nothing to do with salvation, but God through His Spirit brought Dr. Sproul to faith. Imagine what influence he has had and continues to have as a result of a few insignificant college buddies whom God chose to be very significant?
Because of a snowstorm Charles Spurgeon’s attempt to go to church was diverted, and he stumbled into a little Primitive Methodist church where a lay preacher read from Isaiah, and young fifteen year old Spurgeon was converted. Every Christian knows of Charles Spurgeon, but who knows the name of that lay preacher?
Billy Graham was a skeptic until he went to a revival and heard evangelist Mordecai Ham. His heart was moved and he soon surrendered his life to preach. Everyone knows who Billy Graham is, but few know of Ham. The stories are endless of the significance of insignificance.
Do you see yourself as insignificant? Perhaps your insignificance will change the world. Joseph was faithful in prison by asking the prisoners why they were so sad? Had he not asked that question there would be no Israel through which the Messiah would come. Could God have used another way? Yes, but that is not the issue. The issue is that in His providence he leveraged the insignificant to bring about the significant.
Could he be using your insignificance to be of great significance? Who knows? You might be rubbing shoulders with the next Spurgeon. You are far more significant than you think. All by His grace.
